The Role

Athennian is seeking a qualified Database Administrator to work closely with our software development and infrastructure teams to maintain, tune and migrate our databases. The successful candidate for the Database Administrator position will have demonstrated sound technical understanding of large scale database implementations, as well as strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize assignments and work with minimal supervision.

General Responsibilities:

  • Install, tune, implement and upgrade DBMS installations
  • Write and deploy SQL/NoSQL patches - including executing data migrations of customer data to the Athennian application
  • Develop processes for optimizing database security
  • Set and maintain database standards
  • Manage database access
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot database related errors
  • Create and manage database reports, visualizations, and dashboards
  • Create automation for repeating database tasks
  • Provide guidance and support to Application Developers
  • Assist with schema design, code review, query tuning
  • Proactively and regularly make recommendations for system improvements
  • Design and monitor backup processes for server and associated data
  • Recommend and implement emerging database technologies
  • Establish and regularly test a disaster recovery protocols
  • Be available for on-call support as needed

Required Skills/Experience:

  • 2+ years’ professional experience or internship
  • Advanced knowledge of database structure and theory
  • Experience with MySQL and MSSQL and NoSQL like MongoDB
  • Basic understanding of disaster recovery and database backup procedures
  • Familiarity with various DBMS reporting tools
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and assistance
  • Strong analytical skills and detail orientation

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with cloud services (AWS, Microsoft Azure) a plus
  • The ability to organize and plan effectively to meet both short and long term goals and objectives

  • Minimum technical diploma in computing science or related field
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or related field is a plus
